Weeds, Biodiversity and Australia's Land and Water Stewardship Practices

Weed Management in Australia is a high energy industry. It is based on mowing, slashing, burning, mulching, spraying, grazing. Whilst prevention is the obvious first step in weed management, Australia’s horticultural and agricultural industries have offered little help. These industries are  responsible for many plant species being used, sold, distributed and promoted prior to them then taking hold as weeds. These industries also appear to offer herbicides as an acceptable answer to mainstream Australian weed …»»

Land and water stewardship : Rescuing Remnants

I have just been to visit the beautiful Beechmont Plateau, in the Gold Coast Hinterland, SE Qld, Australia.  Adjoining this Plateau is the Lamington Plateau, host to the Lamington National Park , Gondwana Heritage Rainforests and all things wonderful. These biodiverse rainforests with an ancient heritage extend along the border of NE NSW and SE QLD. The Beechmont Plateau was largely a cleared section of the Mt Warning Caldera Region during the 20th century. Photos …»»

Australia's environmental vandalism heritage :the Tweed Coast developers and our childrens' future

Our Children’s Future, when it comes to environmental vandalism is not only OUR concern, but Their concern. The Greens  have given out their Bad  Developer Awards recently. The Tweed Shire Council and the NSW Department of Planning have received dishonourable awards for the worst Government Department and the worst Council. Perhaps you would like to see  other recipients of these developer awards? Try Sylvia Hale’s website – it has all the details. And while you …»»

Endangered ecological community and Kings Forest Development, Tweed Coast, NE NSW.

Some Friends in my Garden

It is mid spring, and after a little rain, the animals are all on the move  in Upper Burringbar, NE NSW, Australia. Here is a collage of photos – some of the animals that share my home environment with me. Some are to be very respected, like the eastern brown snake (bottom RHS) and the white- tail spider (mid RHS). Friends in my garden October 2009 The Striated Pardalot (top RHS) is a frequent visitor …»»

Living with and managing Fireweed in SE Qld and NE NSW

Fireweed (Senecio madagascariensis), is a beautiful yellow flowering herbaceous weed that has spread throughout NE NSW and SE Qld (and also elsewhere in Australia) due to poor land management. It is a health risk to stock and native animals and can invade poorly managed lands easily with its profuse production of wind born seed. Weeds and their spread are usually indicators of nature trying to “fix” itself after mismanagement – overclearing, over grazing and over …»»

Environmental Advocacy Collages - Phantom Koala

“Phantom Koala” (PK) has been travelling about the Mt Warning Caldera Region in SE Qld & NE NSW, Australia. He became a “HERO” after journeying to find his mother, who was trapped in the Kings Forest Area of the Tweed Coast. During his “lifetime”, Koala numbers have diminished dramatically along the central eastern coastal and hinterland strip of Australia due to the unsustainable development of SE Qld and NE NSW. PK looks out over the …»»
